Speech recognition has been somewhat of a UNICORN in the software industry; never really perfecting it or never able to make one without hitting a few bumps on the road. Several Pundits like Ray Kurzwell and Bill Gates have tried to develop and proclaim that speech recognition is the future of computing, but people still rely on input devices like Mouse, Keyboards, and other pointing devices.

Today, people are still curious as to the development of speech recognition software, and if they cost a few dollars or so. Several projects and companies have developed speech recognition programs over the last 2 decades, and some of them are in the 90% accuracy; meaning that even if you are able to train the software with your inflections, it still wouldn’t be good enough for others.

Week # 1: Simon from Simon-listens.org

  • -          Simon is free open-source speech recognition software that will be able to replace your mouse and keyboard. It is very flexible software and allows customization for any other application that requires speech recognition. It is also a candidate for the European Project called E-INCLUSION because of its language-independent programming. The goal of the software is to give physically disabled people and senior citizens to do stuff on the Internet like chat, send emails, do internet banking a lot more. 

Week #2: Perlbox from Perlbox.org

  • -          Perlbox.org develops voice solution for Linux and Unix desktop control. One of their projects is called the Perlbox Voice Control with text-to-speech feature and voice control for specific applications. The text-to-speech feature wouldn’t be possible without the help of the Festival speech synthesizer. There are also desktop plugins which will allow you to control your Linux desktop with the use of your voice, including screen cycling, desktop cycling, quick-locking the screen, and invoking the run dialog. It also has a PSEUDO-COMMAND feature which allows you to enter commands that you may want to speak. There is no need to train the listening agent in this software because the Sphinx2 backend can be used by multiple users without any reconfiguration. It is also resistant to background and ambient noises.

Computers nowadays may become vulnerable to security breaches primarily due to the wide interconnection that the worldwide web provides. Much worse, hackers can steal personal information from our computers and use our identities for a variety of illegal transactions such purchasing items using our credit cards. These are just some of the dangerous scenarios that could arise when our computers are not protected adequately. So what can we do to prevent such situations from happening? Following a simple security measure can be very beneficial in protecting our precious files from the dangers of being corrupted and totally lost due to malicious programs or viruses or even hackers.

Of course a lot of us are not tech savvy enough to be able to singlehandedly fight off any threats coming from the web. But here are simple solutions which any average computer user can understand and easily do.  First is to be cautious and always rely on common sense when dealing with emails coming from an address you are not familiar with. If you are not sure, better delete it immediately particularly if it comes with attachment. Even if the address comes from the people you may know but contain strange messages and links, do not open any attachments or click on the link. Their computers may be infected and spreading the virus through emails.

Next simple measure is to avoid downloading files like for instance freeware, games or other executable programs. If happen to download them, scan the files first before running. Have a good and up to date anti-virus program which can help in scanning and eliminating viruses and other malicious programs. There are free anti-virus programs that could be downloaded on the web and these can adequately protect computers used at home.

Always put up the firewall usually installed into the computer programs like Windows or you can choose to have third party firewall protection if you want better protection. Though there are experts who opine that the one in Windows is already enough. Firewall serves like a security mesh or screen that basically prevents programs or sites from accessing your computer.

Finally be informed by the common internet scams that are designed to dupe people into giving money. Examples of these are emails telling heart breaking stories, making unsolicited job offers, informing you that you have win an online lottery or those that warns you about security concerns. There are sites which identify internet scams and a simple search in Google can help you get to them.
